Kitchen Oil Fire
A friend sent me this video about how NOT to handle an oil fire in the
kitchen. Although your instinct may be to throw water on oil that is
burning in a pan, it is probably the worse thing you can do. The water,
being heaver than oil, will sink to the bottom of the container where it
will be superheated and converted to a blast of steam. That will blow the
burning oil up and out of the pan and cause an even worse problem. The
video is worth watching!
Don't try to smother a fire with sugar or flour or any other substance
that may burn. If you have had fire extinguisher training and want to try
and extinguish it yourself, a fire extinguisher that will smother the fire
is the best bet but be sure you don't direct it so the force of the
extinguisher blows burning oil out of the container! Your best bet is to
call 911 and get out of the way!
