From Jerry Truitt:

I would like to ask our community to participate in "Lights Out America" / "Earth Hour". The only thing I ask is that you join with others in the United States and the rest of the world on Saturday, March 29th, to turn off all non-essential lighting in their homes for one hour (from 8:00 to 9:00 PM).

What's this all about? Lights Out America is part of a world wide effort to draw attention to the need to conserve energy and the ever raising CO2 levels that are threatening our environment. The event will be coordinated to coincide with the global effort "Earth Hour".
"Earth Hour" originated in Sydney Australia as an environmental action by the people. It started with a question: How can we inspire people to take action on climate change?
The answer: Ask the people of Sydney to turn off their lights for one hour.
On 31 March 2007, 2.2 million people and 2,100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour. This massive collective effort reduced Sydney's energy consumption by 10.2% for one hour, which is the equivalent effect of taking 48,000 cars off the road for one hour.
With Sydney icons like the Harbour Bridge and Opera House turning their lights off, and unique events such as weddings by candlelight, the world took notice. Inspired by the collective effort of millions of Sydneysiders, many major global cities are joining Earth Hour in 2008, turning a symbolic event into a global movement.
In the US, San Francisco launched an event on October 20th, 2007 and it was an amazing success. The World Wildlife Fund decided to bring "Earth Hour" to the United States. Lights Out America supported this effort and coordinated their 2008 event with the WWF and "Earth Hour".
What else can you do to show your support of this effort to save our environment? Talk to your town, community and local businesses; try to get them to join "Lights Out America" / "Earth Hour". The more that join the more energy saved for that hour.
On a personal level, simply use less energy. Even little things make a difference; replace any standard incandescent light-bulbs with a CFL (compact fluorescent light) where possible. Use mass transit or car pool to get to work.
You don't have to buy into global warming to participate. Saving energy and reducing pollution just makes sense no matter what you think is changing our environment. So please join and turn your lights out on March 29, from 8 to 9.
